Bohey Dulang rises 353 metres above the Celebes Sea as the dormant cone of a submarine volcano, its crater now flooded by tidal exchange to form a sheltered lagoon ringed by mangrove and coral rubble.
The island sits at the geographic heart of Tun Sakaran Marine Park, Malaysia's first gazetted marine protected area, established in 2004 across 350 square kilometres of reef platforms, seagrass meadows, and six main islands. The name Bohey Dulang derives from the Bajau Laut language — bohey meaning "dormant" or "sleeping," and dulang referencing the circular wooden tray used in traditional ceremonies, a metaphor for the island's crater basin visible only from the summit ridge.
